At 4:44pm August 25th fire and medical crews from North Douglas County Fire & EMS and South Lane Fire & Rescue were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident at milepost 168 I-5 southbound. Fire and Medical units worked quickly to remove the passenger who was transported to Riverbend. During the extrication of the patient, North Douglas County Fire & EMS received a report of a second motor vehicle accident at milepost 166 I-5 Northbound. Fire crews from North Douglas Fire and South Lane Fire quickly turned the scene over to Oregon State Police and Oregon Department of Transportation and headed to the secondary accident along with additional North Douglas units responding to setup a landing zone for incoming Air Ambulances.
Two Life Flight Air Ambulances were landed on I-5 just north of the accident while crews extricated the patients. Both patients were transported by Life Flight to Riverbend.
I-5 north and south was closed for several hours while crews cleared the vehicles involved.
