Backside Baldy Lane Natural Cover Fire

An aggressive and coordinated initial attack by the Douglas Forest Protective Association and North Douglas County Fire & EMS stopped a fast moving grass fire, Saturday afternoon that had the potential to become a large, devastating wildfire. Firefighters from both agencies responded to the area of Backside Baldy Lane, located 3 miles northwest of Yoncalla, at approximately 5:20 pm. The first engine on scene of the fire reported that it was two acres in size and was moving through a field at a fast rate of spread. DFPA’s Helicopter was used to drop buckets of water on the head of the fire to slow its forward spread while engine crews from both agencies and a bull dozer from the landowner worked their way around the outside of the fire.

Firefighters stopped the Backside Baldy Lane Fire at approximately 12 acres of grass and light brush and remained on scene of the fire until 9:00 pm, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines. Minor damage was reported to a deck and siding of one structure, located near the fire. The cause of the Backside Baldy Lane Fire is currently under investigation.
